How valuable is liberty relative to health care?
August 8th, 2009 | by admin |A common debate here is whether access to basic health care ought to be a right and so be provided by government. However, giving more power to government to do the things that you want also empowers it to do things that you don’t want. A government armed with trillions of dollars to fund health care is also able to divert a good deal of that money to waging some pretty big wars and also controlling the lives of its subject to the benefit of special interests.
At the same time, I grant that liberty does you little good if you are not healthy. Yet is arguing against government health care the same as arguing against health care generally?
To the people who advocate expanded government power to provide basic health care: how do you measure the loss of liberty when you empower the government to do this?
To the people who want to lessen government power: what kind of assurances can you provide that people will be able to obtain basic health care? If not government, what mechanisms would work to do this?
